MAK Studio is a San Francisco based, full-service design firm specializing in architecture and interior design services for both residential and commercial clients. From concept through construction, we are dedicated to the highest level of design service and management. Every project is custom-tailored to the client's specific needs and aspirations, a process that is guided by an ideological rather than a stylistic approach– which allows for unique spatial and formal solutions to take shape. We view each design as an opportunity to explore thoughtful details and an imaginative use of materials intertwined with a strong commitment to social and environmental sensitivity. Working collaboratively with builders, craftsmen, artisans, and fabricators, we endeavor to create refined environments of simple, understated beauty.
Our firm has previously been awarded the grand prize in the American Institute of Architects' international competition, placing ahead of over 1700 entries for our design proposal of affordable housing in Monterey, California.
Michael Alexander Kao, the design principal, has taught extensively in the department of architecture at the University of California- Berkeley, where he also received his masters degree in architecture. Before the forming of MAK Studio, Michael has won numerous national and international design competitions– the most notable being a finalist position in an international competition to design a new building for the German House of Representation.
